‘Achievement is not what people expect or think of you, it’s about having a dream or a goal and achieving it despite setbacks and adversity.’ – Andrew Cooney
Yesterday saw Year 9 and 10 Geography students off timetable in order to firstly listen to an inspirational presentation by Andrew. He gave a history of his life, explaining how he ended up walking to the South Pole.
In the afternoon, a selection of students attended a workshop, where Andrew talked them through his South Pole kit, and answered further questions.
The information Andrew provided about his journey, and in particular the equipment he took and the challenges he faced, will be vital when you come to complete your coursework. You should write up your notes while it is still fresh.
The school multimedia technician will be creating a DVD resource you can refer to.
STUDENT COMMENTS:
“I found all of the answers to questions I had prepared, so it is very useful for my coursework”.
“I think the presentation was exceedingly helpful and extremely clear. There was not a single part I did not understand. Furthermore I had the chance to actually experience the kit Andrew had used”.
"I looked forward and enjoyed Andrew Coney’s visit. I liked the fact that he told us a bit about his life before the trip to the South Pole. It helped us understand why he did it. It was also better then diving straight into the Pole, and I found it fascinating to hear a little bit about him. I enjoyed seeing the equipment and the video; it helped us imagine what life was like in the South Pole better then if he just tried to describe it to us.
I liked seeing all the equipment instead of pictures or trying to picture them ourselves.
I think he should continue his visit, since they are both fun and factual".
"Andrew gave details about every aspect of his adventure. I found it all really enjoyable”.
“I found the visit very helpful towards my coursework. He provided me with new information, as well as helping me to understand stuff we had talked about in class. I am very grateful he gave up his time talking to us”.
“I found the sessions really informative, and I learned much more than I would in a normal lesson”.
“I found the talk from Andrew useful. He spoke well and was very professional with the language he used throughout his presentation. I found the photos and video useful as I could see some of the technical terms he was talking about, such as nunataks. Seeing the equipment he used was also very helpful”.
